We have made a modified version of an anti-cancer drug, combretastatin A-4, by replacing two carbon atoms with nitrogens. The resulting azobenzene derivative has potency that can be switched on with light and over time turns itself "off." As such it is a new type of anticancer drug with exquisite light-targeted control.
